Look up. Cranes, and two kinds of stone: the older, stained sections and the new, paler ones.
Look ahead at the arch: red brick, glazed tile, and on this uphill side, a stone frieze. It's 'Barcelona welcomes the nations', by Josep Reynés. Barcelona is a crowned woman, arms spread wide.
Look into the park as you pass. This green space was once a fortress, aimed at the city itself.
Look along the sand. Inland are the narrow, straight streets of Barceloneta, with laundry on the balconies. Those streets have a story.
Look up at the top of the column: Columbus, right arm out toward the harbour and the sea. The whole monument is about sixty metres tall.
Look down at the paving under the plane trees. It ripples like water. That's a nod to what this street used to be.
Look up at the cathedral front: tall and pale, with spires, saints, angels and gargoyles. It looks medieval. It isn't.
