The stories on this route

  1. Massachusetts State House

Look up at the gold dome, and the gilded pine cone on top of it. That pine cone stands for Boston's early lumber trade, and for Maine, which was still part of Massachusetts back then. Charles Bulfinch designed this building. In 1802, Paul Revere and Sons covered the dome in copper. For years it was painted gray.

  2. African Meeting House

Look into Smith Court, and find the words above the door of the plain brick meeting house: "Cato Gardner, first Promoter of this Building 1806."

  3. Louisburg Square

Look through the railings at the little grass oval, with a statue at each end. Aristides the Just is at the Mount Vernon Street end, Columbus at the Pinckney Street end. The story goes that both came over from Italy as ship's ballast. This park is private.

  4. Acorn Street

Look down the cobbles of Acorn Street, between the brick sidewalks. It's often called the most photographed street in the United States. It was laid out in 1823, on purpose, for small houses. The big houses went on Mount Vernon Street, just above, and you're looking at their backs.

  5. Charles Street Meeting House

Look up at the tower and cupola on the corner of Charles and Mount Vernon. This went up in 1807 for the Third Baptist Church. The congregation baptized people in the nearby Charles River.
