Look at the two tall towers with their fans of cables. Each one ends in a point shaped like an obelisk. That's a nod to the nearby Bunker Hill Monument.
Look at the low stone outlines in the lawn. They mark the Great House, built around 1630 for Governor John Winthrop. Charlestown was founded in 1629, and for a short while it was the center of colonial government. Winthrop lived in this house. The Court met here, and the church held services here.
Look for the low wooden building with the hanging tavern sign. This is the Warren Tavern, and it opened in 1780. The British had burned almost the whole town in 1775. This was one of the first houses built after the fire.
Look for the bronze statue with the raised sword. That's Colonel William Prescott.
Look for the long, granite-lined basin by the museum. This is Dry Dock 1.
Look for the three tall masts. That's USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. She launched in Boston in 1797. Her hull was built twenty-one inches thick, from oak harvested by enslaved workers.
