Look up at the limestone wall: YANKEE STADIUM, cut into the stone and lettered in gold above the gates. About eleven thousand pieces of Indiana limestone went into the outside.
Look across 161st Street at those open ballfields. This was the old Yankee Stadium, home of the Yankees from 1923 to 2008.
Look at the big pale limestone block, raised on its granite base and terrace. This is the Bronx County Courthouse, built between 1931 and 1934. During the Depression, publicly funded projects like this gave architects and artists welcome large commissions.
Look for the white marble fountain. It shows the Lorelei, a siren from German myth, with three mermaids sitting in the bowl at its base. On the front of the base is a profile of the poet Heinrich Heine, with his signature underneath. Heine wrote a poem to the Lorelei.
Look up the Grand Concourse, and the apartment houses that line it. It was modeled on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, but it's considerably bigger.
Look at the long, palace-like building behind the lawn and terrace. Its main model is the Palazzo Farnese in Rome. This is the Andrew Freedman Home.
