Look at the island from the footbridge. It looks like wild woods. It wasn't always.
Look upstream from the bridge. Near the Virginia shore, a stone pier stands alone in the river. On the Georgetown bank, just west of here, there's an old stone abutment. They're part of what's left of the old Aqueduct Bridge.
Look up this narrow, steep flight of steps between the stone wall and the old Car Barn. They climb from M Street to Prospect Street.
Look at the canal, with the towpath beside it and the stone locks with their wooden gates.
Look up Wisconsin Avenue from the river. You're looking along the old rolling road for tobacco hogsheads, coming in from rural Maryland.
Look at the long curving buildings, with balconies staggered floor to floor and heavy concrete railings that suggest battlements. This is the Watergate, six linked buildings by the Italian modernist Luigi Moretti, built between 1964 and 1971.
Look at the long white building above the river. It's 630 feet from end to end.
