Look up at the two piers. Each one is three Doric columns and a square pillar. On top stand big figures: two miners on one side, two pioneer women on the other.
Look up at the bronze woman with the sword and shield. She's eighteen feet tall, and she represents the State. Around her are three groups, Loyalty, Love and Learning, and at the edges of the pool stand three great granite blocks. Water cascades between the blocks, down through lower basins into the big round pool.
Behind that fence is Denver Zoo. It started with one bear cub.
The museum stands on the highest ground in City Park. This story starts in New Mexico.
Look out across the water. On his walks around this lake, a Denver poet used to whistle or hum as he went. His name was Thomas Hornsby Ferril.
