The stories on this route

  1. Marcus Garvey Park

Look up at the top of the rocky hill in the middle of the park. That open iron tower, with a bell, is a fire lookout. It went up around 1855, designed by James Bogardus. It's forty-seven feet tall, with a spiral stair curving up through it.

  2. Hotel Theresa

Look at the tall white building on the corner of 125th Street, thirteen stories of white brick and terra cotta. This was the Hotel Theresa. In September 1960, Fidel Castro came to New York to speak at the United Nations. He moved his whole delegation up here, into forty suites.

  3. Apollo Theater

Look for the tall red Apollo sign rising over 125th Street, and the plaques of the Walk of Fame in the sidewalk out front.

  4. Schomburg Center

Look at the library on Lenox Avenue, between 135th and 136th, and the older classical building around the corner, at 103 West 135th.

  5. Abyssinian Baptist Church

Look at the stone church with the big pointed Gothic arch over the door. This is Abyssinian Baptist Church.

  6. Strivers' Row

Look through the iron gates between the houses. Behind them are back alleys, a rarity in Manhattan. They let horses be stabled, and supplies delivered, without disturbing the main houses. Some gates have signs reading "Walk Your Horses".
