Look up over the park's eastern edge. That's Lēʻahi, Diamond Head, and this whole wide plain sits at its foot.
Look at the arch by the sea. Across the top it says "The War Memorial". Above that, an American eagle perches at each corner, with the Hawaiian motto and seal in the centre.
Look up at the ridgeline. See the shape? The Hawaiian name is Lēʻahi, most likely from lae, a brow or promontory, and ʻahi, tuna. The ridge looks like a tuna's dorsal fin.
Look across the Ala Wai Canal: wide and straight, with lava-rock walls and steps down to the water. You may see outrigger crews paddling past.
Look through the coconut palms. This ground is Helumoa, the royal coconut grove, once a royal residence of Kamehameha V. His cottage is gone, but palms of the royal grove remain. Beyond them, bright pink, is the Royal Hawaiian. Its nickname: "The Pink Palace of the Pacific."
Look at the bronze on Kūhiō Beach: Duke Kahanamoku, nine feet tall, arms spread wide, a long surfboard behind him. He faces the street, not the ocean. That's on purpose: he's welcoming people, in the spirit of aloha.
