The stories on this route

  1. Doctors' Row, Bay Ridge Parkway

Look east down this wide, tree-lined street: two rows of limestone houses, two stories each, with bowed fronts. This is Doctors' Row. But the doctors came later.

  2. St. Michael's Church, Sunset Park

Look at the big dome on the tall tower of this church, St. Michael's. People often call it Brooklyn's own Sacre-Coeur.

  3. Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower

Look up at the clock tower, and the gold dome on top. At 512 feet, this was Brooklyn's tallest building for about 80 years, until 2009.

  4. Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church

Look at the church's front: three round-arched doors, a shorter tower on one side and a taller one on the other. It was built in 1861 and 1862, and it cost $42,000.

  5. Kings County Savings Bank

On Broadway, at number 135, look for the old stone bank in the French Second Empire style. This is the Kings County Savings Bank.

  6. St. Anthony of Padua Church, Greenpoint

Look at the tall brick church with the clock faces and the slender spire. It's 240 feet high, and one of the most dramatic urban views in New York City, in the words of the city's landmark experts. The best view is down Milton Street.

  7. Pulaski Bridge (the marathon halfway point)

Look down at the roadway under your feet. It's a drawbridge, built in two halves, called leaves, that lift for boats on Newtown Creek. It opens about five hundred times a year.
