The stories on this route

  1. José Martí Park

Look up. The I-95 overpass passes right over this park, with basketball courts underneath it. Now look the other way, at the Miami River and the boats going by.

  2. Calle Ocho Walk of Fame

Look down. Pink marble stars set in the sidewalk, each with a name: Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias, Thalía, Desi Arnaz. This is the Calle Ocho Walk of Fame, Little Havana's take on Hollywood. Celia Cruz, the Queen of Salsa, has a star here too, listed under 1991. That same year, Miami gave her something more.

  3. Cuban Memorial Boulevard

Look at the six-sided monument at the head of the boulevard, with a flame on top. This is the Eternal Torch of Brigade 2506. It burns for the men who lost their lives in the Bay of Pigs campaign of April 1961, more than a hundred of them, and their names are engraved on it. Here's the twist.

  4. Domino Park

Look through the fence on the corner of Calle Ocho and 15th Avenue, at the shaded tables packed in tight. Officially, this is Máximo Gómez Park. Find his bust. Gómez commanded Cuban forces in the War of Independence of 1895 to 1898. As one guidebook points out, he was Dominican-born.
