The stories on this route

  1. Guthrie Theater

Look up at the Guthrie Theater, and that long arm reaching out toward the Mississippi. It's the Endless Bridge, 178 feet of cantilever, and it's open to visitors during building hours. The architect Jean Nouvel designed it.

  2. Washburn A Mill and the Gold Medal Flour sign

Look up at the grain elevator: two Gold Medal Flour signs, each thirty feet high. At night they still light up. Now look at the roofless stone walls beside them. That's the Washburn A Mill.

  3. St. Anthony Falls

Look upstream at that wide concrete slope, with the water sheeting over it. That's St. Anthony Falls, the only major waterfall on the Mississippi.

  4. Stone Arch Bridge

You're on the Stone Arch Bridge. Feel the stone under you. It's the only arched stone bridge on the entire Mississippi.

  5. Pillsbury A Mill

Look for the Pillsbury's Best Flour sign on top of the big stone mill. Across the river is the Washburn A Mill. The two mills were competitors.

  6. Nicollet Island

Look for the big Grain Belt sign on the island beside the bridge. It moved here in 1950. In 2017 it lit up again, with LEDs.
