Look ahead: the three spires of St. Louis Cathedral. On one side, the Cabildo, with an American eagle in its pediment. On the other, the matching Presbytere. In the middle, Andrew Jackson rears on his horse.
Look for the green-and-white awnings of Cafe du Monde. It started here in 1862, as a coffee stand at the upriver end of the French Market, and it's the oldest coffee shop in New Orleans. The menu is short. Beignets are the only food this location serves, under a thick coat of powdered sugar, in orders of three.
Look past the gatehouse and garden at the plain, symmetrical front, with its broad hipped roof and little dormers. This is the Old Ursuline Convent.
Look at the low cottage on the corner. Where the plaster has crumbled away, you can see soft brick set between timber posts, a rare survivor of that way of building. The roof flares gracefully at the eaves. It was most likely built as a house in the 1770s, and it's one of the oldest surviving buildings in New Orleans.
Look for the weathered old front at 726 St. Peter Street. This is Preservation Hall.
Look at the open brick plaza under the big oaks. This is Congo Square.
