The stories on this route

  1. The 1958 riots and the Notting Hill Carnival

Welcome to Notting Hill! We're starting at the corner of Tavistock Road and Portobello Road, and the walk is about 3 miles, ending in Kensington Gardens. Each story plays by itself when you reach its stop, so just stroll and listen.

  2. Notting Hill film locations

Look for the shopfront at 142 Portobello Road, signed as the Travel Book Shop. In the film Notting Hill, this is the bookshop run by Hugh Grant's character, Will. Julia Roberts plays the actress who walks into his life.

  3. Portobello Road Market

Look at the antique stalls and arcades around you, and find the sign for Vernon Yard. That's where this story starts.

  4. La Mia Mamma (lunch)

Follow Kensington Park Road a short way, turn left into Elgin Crescent, then right onto Portobello Road. Stay on Portobello Road for about ten minutes, and look out for the blue plaque at number 22.

  5. George Orwell's plaque, 22 Portobello Road

Look up at the round blue plaque on No. 22. It's a private house, so enjoy it from the pavement. The plaque remembers George Orwell.

  6. Kensington Palace Gardens

Look at the lodge and the cast-iron gates at this end. Both are listed. Then look past them, down the avenue.

  7. Kensington Palace

Look at the white marble statue on the lawn in front of the palace. That's Queen Victoria, aged 18, in her coronation robes. Her daughter, Princess Louise, sculpted it.

  8. Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground

Look over the fence at the wooden galleon. It's brand new.

  9. Peter Pan statue

Look at the tree stump, and see who's climbing it. Small bronze rabbits, squirrels, mice and fairies. On top, Peter Pan is blowing his pipe.
