Look over at the bandshell, off West Drive, beside the Harmony Playground at the edge of the Long Meadow.
Look through the trees at the fenced, wooded patch behind the gate. You'll see small, plain stones. No showy tombs, which is Quaker custom. The gate is usually locked.
Look out at the water, and the wooded islands. None of this was here. Apart from part of one stream, the whole watercourse was man-made.
Look beside the drive at the white colonnade. Corinthian columns stand on a low platform, with a balustrade along the roof. This is the Grecian Shelter. McKim, Mead and White finished it in 1905, and it's a city landmark.
Look beside the road for the Dongan Oak Monument. A bronze eagle spreads its wings on top of a granite shaft. Now find the boulder with a bronze plaque on the west side of the drive. That boulder marks Battle Pass.
Look up at the top of the arch. A four-horse chariot carries Columbia, the female figure of the United States. The group is about 25 feet tall and weighs about 25 tons.
