The stories on this route

  1. Villa Borghese

Look out over the lake: a white temple on its little island, reflected in the water. It's the Temple of Aesculapius, the god of medicine. The architect Antonio Asprucci and his son Mario built it between 1785 and 1792, while they were landscaping these gardens.

  2. Piazza del Popolo

Look at the middle of the square: the red granite obelisk, with hieroglyphs on all four sides and four stone lions spouting water at its foot.

  3. The Ara Pacis

Look through the glass wall of the long white building. Inside is the marble enclosure of the Ara Pacis, the Altar of Peace.

  4. The Jewish Ghetto

Look at the ancient columns and the brick arch of the Portico d'Ottavia. The little square in front carries a date: Largo 16 ottobre 1943. That Saturday, the roundup began at half past five in the morning. German police sealed off the ghetto. In the raid, 1,259 people were detained.

  5. Tiber Island

Ahead is Tiber Island, the only river island in Rome's stretch of the Tiber. It's shaped like a boat, about 270 metres long.

  6. Santa Maria in Trastevere

This is the finish. Look up at the facade, at the medieval mosaic: Mary on a throne, nursing the Child, flanked by ten women holding lamps.
