Look out over the bay at the bridge: a long, sweeping curve, rising high over the shipping channel toward downtown San Diego.
Look for the salvaged ticket booth here in Centennial Park, a reminder of the old ferry days. For 83 years, cars loaded up on this spot for the trip across San Diego Bay.
Look across the big lawn of Spreckels Park, with the bandstand in the middle. Then look across Orange Avenue at the library.
Look at the white mansion set back on its lawn, with Glorietta Bay just behind. This was the home of John D. Spreckels, owner of the hotel across the way.
Look at the red roofs and towers rising over the sand. The 1977 landmark nomination says the Del rises from the peninsula "like a castle."
Look down at the wet sand. See it glitter? Those gold specks are mica. It washed down the Tijuana River from the mountains in Mexico, and the Silver Strand current carried it north to these beaches.
