Look at the plain white walls and the arches. This is the Museum of Contemporary Art, but it began as a home.
Look out at the curved seawall reaching out from the point, and the crescent of sand behind it. That concrete breakwater went up in 1931. Ellen Browning Scripps paid for it. She wanted a place where children could play and swim, protected from waves. Governor James Rolph Jr. signed an act that year confirming her gift.
Look up at the pink walls and the tiled tower. This is La Valencia, known as the Pink Lady of La Jolla, for its rose-colored walls. It opened in 1926 as an apartment hotel called Los Apartmentos de Sevilla, and took its current name two years later.
Look down at the cove: a small beach, cliffs all around, and Point La Jolla on the south side, with sea lions on its rocks.
Look at the small Cave Store on the cliff edge. A tunnel starts inside it. At the bottom is Sunny Jim Cave, one of the seven sister caves at the foot of these cliffs.
