Look up at the rainbow flag on that tall pole. It flies for Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in California. He opened a camera store, Castro Camera, and in 1977 he won a seat as a San Francisco supervisor. A year later, he was shot and killed inside City Hall.
Look across the lawn as it slopes up toward Church Street, with the streetcar tracks along the top.
Look at the small whitewashed church, low beside the big Basilica on the corner. The little one is the oldest intact structure in San Francisco.
Look down the alley. Both walls, the garage doors, the fences: all of it painted. It's one block long and about fifteen feet wide. Since 1992, the Clarion Alley Mural Project has covered it in murals. Six people from the North Mission started it. One of them called himself Rigo 92.
Look at the giant faces on the corners of this building, each two stories tall, gazing at each other.
