Look just north of the pavilion, at the clubhouse of the Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club. In 2005, Surf Life Saving Australia recognised it as the first surf lifesaving club.
Look down at the long ocean pool cut into the rocks, and the clubhouse on the cliff above.
Look down at Tamarama, the tiny, steep beach in the green gully. It's hard to picture, but this was an amusement park.
Look down at Bronte: a short beach, the surf club in the middle, and a green gully running inland. People often think it's named after the Brontë sisters. It isn't.
Look up the slope: white marble headstones, angels and crosses, with the open sea beside you. Waverley Cemetery opened in 1877, on Gadigal land. Again and again, its builders used white Italian Carrara marble, and the place proved highly popular. It paid back its setup costs within the first year.
Look down the bay: long and narrow, calm water, swimmers doing laps, and the small beach right at the end. This was once called Little Coogee. In 1913 it became Clovelly, after a local estate, which was itself named after a village on the north Devon coast of England.
Look across the road from the middle of the beach: the domed Coogee Pavilion. The story goes it was once the Coogee Aquarium. In 1935, the Coogee Aquarium Baths held a 3.5-metre tiger shark.
